Field trips are very interesting part of your Geography studies.
These field trips can last from one day to two or more weeks.
Here you can find some tips for your field trip preparation, in order to make the best memories possible.
The right clothes: for the season, the current weather, and the excursion’s program. Field trips take place regardless of the weather, even in snow and rain. There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing
The right shoes: Due to the fact that walking is a big part of most field trips, the right shoes (comfortable, blister-free) are extremely important! For field work you should have a good pair of mountain boots that go over the ankles and are waterproof. If you buy a new pair of mountain boots, please break them in before the excursion. The right shoes are even important for Human Geography field trips: please do not wear flip-flops!
Sunscreen, Umbrella: Sometimes you might want to have both with you! You never know how the weather might be!
Clipboard, Pen, Digital Camera: in order to process everything that takes place on your field trip. Please ask before taking any videos or audio recordings.
Accident Insurance: Due to the fact that you are “registered and not suspended” you are covered under the university’s accident insurance.
Health Insurance: Due to the fact that you are “registered and not suspended” you must have health insurance and are therefore must have insurance within Germany. This insurance is only partly valid, or not valid at all, when you are out of the country. Please contact your insurance BEFORE YOUR FIELD TRIP. In case your insurance does not cover any expenses outside of Germany, you will need travel health insurance. A comparison of travel health insurances based on price and performance can be found on the Internet (Stiftung Warentest, etc).
Liability Insurance: The university does not cover your liability insurance. Liability insurance, however, is one of the most important insurances and would cover some of any damage costs (ex. in hotels, etc.). Please contact your parents/your insurance to see if you currently have liability insurance. A comparison of liability insurances based on price and performance can be found on the Internet (Stiftung Warentest, etc).
Trip Cancelation Insurance: For longer field trips, especially those with long-distance flights, we recommend some form of trip cancelation insurance. Please ask your field trip leader, if this insurance is already included in the price of the trip.
If not: Some “gold credit cards” (Master Card, Visa) include trip cancelation insurance for all family members. For cases like this please contact your credit institution/parents. A comparison of trip cancelation insurances based on price and performance can be found on the Internet (Stiftung Warentest, etc).
Rules regarding travel cancelation/withdrawal
The following rule applying during all field trips and studies:
Students can be sent home for inappropriate behavior.
Students must pay for an unplanned trip home by himself/herself.
Students are responsible for health insurance abroad.
Policy Statement: Field trips are not courses for profit. Field trips require student to prepare accordingly. Any student whose preparation is not is accordance with the standards of the field trip can be replaced. For reasons such as this, certain cancelation policies apply.
