Information for First-Year Students

 

Congratulations on your acceptance at the CAU Kiel!

After competing with the more than 1000 applications that the Department of Geography at CAU Kiel, you have been accepted to study Geography in Kiel! We would like to wish you all the best for your time here!

In order to make your transition easier, we have compiled a list of important points, which will help you successfully complete your degree here in Kiel!

General Help for First-Year Students

The Central Course Guidance (in german) at CAU offers a bride general guidance and support for first-year students.

Welcome Week for First-Year Students

At the beginning of every winter semester the Institute of Geography offers a welcome week with introductory and informational events for first-year students.

These events will help you become acquainted with the Department of Geography and its professors and staff. All first-year, transfer, and foreign students are required to attend all organizational events, seminar assignment events, the library tour and PC-Lab briefing.

You will find the exact program in German on our German Main page from early october. Please contact the study program manager for further questions. 

Which courses do I have to take?

Please consult your certificate of enrollment because your course requirements vary according to degree program (1-Subject Bachelor vs. 2-Subject Bachelor).

In the first semester the following courses must be completed:

  • MNF-Geogr.-01: Physical Geography I

  • MNF-Geogr.-03: Human Geography I
    • Lecture
    • Accompanying Seminar *
    • Field Study/Excursion (in the framework of the seminar)
  • MNF-Geogr.-71: GIS I
    • Lecture GIS
    • Exercise Course GIS *
  • MNF-Geogr.-72: Remote Sensing
    • Lecture

In the first semester the following courses must be completed:

  • MNF-Geogr.-01: Physical Geography I
    • Lecture
    • Accompanying Seminar *
    • Field Study/Excursion (in the framework of the seminar)
  • MNF-Geogr.-80: Geography Methody for Teacher
    • Exercise Course IKT *

 

(In timetable problems can be chosen instead of Physical Geography Human Geography.)

The courses marked with a * require registration. The registration takes place during the welcome week for first-year students.

 

Library and PC-Lab Briefing

As part of the welcome week for first-year students, all students must complete the following:

  1. an introductory course for the Institute of Geography’s PC-Labs
  2. an introductory course for the use of the Institute of Geography’s library.

Reading Tips for the Beginning of your Studies!

The following, incomplete list shows a couple of good and current textbooks that provide a good introduction to Geography: for future students, for first year students, or even as a present! Both books are in German!
