BAFöG & Funding

Support and Funding Opportunities for your Geography Degree

For many students it is difficult to finance their degrees. On top of this, students who suffer finance problems or work too much on the side, normally end up studying outside of the standard period of study. The following tips are there to help you realize what financial support is out there, so you can concentrate completely on your studies.

BAFöG

BAFöG is the most popular form of financial support among students. General information regarding BAFöG can be found here: http://www.bafög.de/ (German).

The BAFöG-Office at Kiel University can be found in the Studentwerk.

For advice regarding BAFöG please contact the BAFöG representative, the studies coordinator Lutz-Michael Vollmer (Substitute: Prof. Dr. W. Hoppe).

In order to extend the BAFöG benefits beyond the third semester your will need Formblatt 5 (pink): Certificate of Academic Achievement according to nach §48 BAFöG.

Apply for a current transcript of records in Examination Office Geography, please add that you need it for “BAFöG Geographie”.  This way, the summary will automatically be sent to the study porgram manager.
The Formblatt 5 can then be picked up the following week during the studies coordinator’s office hours. Please respect the current office hours.

When will I receive an approved notice?

An approval is only possible when the student has completed and passed all required courses by the end of the third semester. In particular, please note:

One-Subject-Bachelor

  • At the end of the third semester, the student must have completed at least 85 credit points in Geography. If credit points are missing, only a maximal of two academic assessments (exam or term paper) should be lacking.
  • The status of the elective subjects will not be considered, due to the lack of standard schedule.
The sequence of the “Special Geography” and “Study Project” modules is optional.
  • Any missed excursion days in the modules Physical Geography I and II and Human Geography I and II will not be considered in a negative way.

Two-Subject-Bachelor

  • The following statement is refers only to the required 70 credit points in Geography. For information regarding your second subject, please contact the listed responsible.
  • At the end of the third semester, the student must have completed at least 35 credit points in Geography. If credit points are missing, only a maximal of one academic assessment (exam or term paper) should be lacking.
  • The sequence of the “Physical Geography I and II” and the “Human Geography I and II” modules is optional.
  • Any missed excursion days in the modules Physical Geography I and II and Human Geography I and II will not be considered in a negative way.

If the aforementioned conditions are not fulfilled, your notice will not be approved positive. For any other BAFöG notices for other terms, the aforementioned conditions also apply.

Study Credit

Another form of financial support available through the German national government (for those who do not qualify for BAFöG) is the Bildungskreditprogramm (Education Credit Program).
